Missing e continuing to update throughout the weekend!

Over this weekend, as I find more issues with Missing e on the new Tumblr dashboard layout, I will continue to update Missing e. However, I most likely won’t announce new versions unless they fix something major.

You can check to see if your Missing e is up-to-date, by visiting the update page. If a new version is available, you’ll be able to download it there. If you are up-to-date, the page will tell you so!

For example, I just released Missing e 2.13.1 which fixes the magnifier for avatars in dashboard notifications (they no longer open new tabs) and the extra blog drop-down menu when you open the manual reblog page when reblogging your own posts.

If your Missing e is up-to-date and you notice a problem that hasn’t been fixed yet, please let me know!

New Tumblr Dash Layout - Missing e issues I’m working on

In the last hour, Tumblr pushed out a new dashboard layout.

Some improvements include restoring a (partial) Tumblr blog sidebar element to the main dashboard.

I will be working this weekend to apply style fixes for Missing e and look into any possible improvements.

Please note that I am already hard at work on these issues:

  • The Quick Reblog drop-down menu doesn’t show a selection menu for side blogs
  • You may not be able to reblog yourself to the same blog as the original post
  • Mass Delete buttons don’t show up correctly in the Inbox

If you notice any additional functional issues (a broken Missing e feature), please let me know here.

Can’t update Firefox? Still want to keep using Missing e?

I just updated Missing e to version 2.10.4 which should restore compatibility to people who aren’t using the most up-to-date version of Firefox.

Basically, if you use Firefox and Missing e worked for you yesterday, this version should also work for you!

You can update here: missing-e.com/update

Missing e missing? Are you using an old version of Firefox?

Firefox users may notice that new versions of Missing e don’t work or seem to disappear.

This seems to be because the newest version of the framework Missing e is built on needs the current version of Firefox.

I may be able to find a workaround, but it would only be temporary.

Instead, I suggest you update Firefox to the current version (that would be 13 at the moment).

~ Quickly check if your Missing e is up to date ~

To find out if there is a newer version of Missing e available, simply visit the Missing e website. A small bubble will appear in the middle of the page telling you if your browser has an up-to-date version of the extension. If it shows a newer version, simply click the bubble to see instructions on updating Missing e.

If you do not see the bubble at all, either you do not have Missing e installed or your version of Missing e is very old. If that is the case, you may need to uninstall the old copy and install the current version from the official site.

The Missing e Update Bubble - What it means and how to make it go away!

~ What Does It Mean? ~

When the Missing e update bubble shows up, this means there is an important new version of the browser extension. I only cause it to show up when the new version fixes some major feature that has become broken (often because of changes to the Tumblr interface).

For example, a recent change to Tumblr caused the Quick (1-Click) Reblogging feature to stop working, and some users of the Ask Tweaks feature to be unable to respond to messages. This was quickly fixed, however. To ensure as many users as possible get the new version, the Update bubble shows up!

~ How Do I Update? ~

If you click on the red Update bubble, a new tab or window will open with instructions on how to manually update Missing e. Some people’s browsers will update Missing e automatically, and others will need to follow these instructions!

You can also follow the instructions on the Missing e FAQ page on how to update.

~ Will I Lose Any Features? ~

No! When the update bubble shows up, this means that a feature has broken and a new update fixes the problem! In fact, if you don’t update, you will lose one or more features (since they remain broken if you don’t update).

I believe this worry stems from the only time Missing e has removed features. Almost half a year ago, the Follow Checker and Unfollower features were removed. I realize that many people desired these features, but removing them was necessary to ensure I would be able to continue distributing Missing e and adding new features in the future.

If you haven’t updated in a while, rest assured that you will not lose any functionality. In fact, it is likely that you have not yet gotten the chance to use many new features are added to Missing e quite often!

Version 2.3.15: Missing e’s problematic update

Thanks to a mistake I made late Thursday night when I uploaded a new version of Missing e, some users had a problem with the Safe Dash feature becoming activated for photo posts, despite not having turned it on. Thanks to some quick messages from your fellow users, I was able to find and fix the mistake that same night. The next problem was a change to the Dashboard Tweaks feature that replaces buttons on dashboard posts (“reblog”, “edit”, etc) with icons. Basically, I modified the image that Missing e uses, changing the order of the icons. So, for a little while some users had their icons out of place.

Note that if these problems still happen for you, all you need to do is to update Missing e (instructions later in this post).

Now that the issues have been fixed for most users, I just wanted to let you know what the changes actually were!

It used to be that when new posts are loaded into your dashboard (especially with Tumblr’s “endless scrolling” dash), Missing e would have to run through every one of them to replace icons. This wasn’t extremely slow, but it wasn’t fast either.

As of the last few versions of Missing e, this process is done once when you first load the page, and left to the browser to do for new posts. This makes icon replacement a lot faster. Most users may not notice a difference, but people using slower computers or computers that are hard at work on lots of other things may notice a speedup!

In the future, if you are experience problems with Missing e or have any questions about it, please feel free to drop by the askbox to let me know!

Missing e 2.2.17: A fix for reblogging ask posts from permalink pages

There was a bit of a bug in the recent Better Reblogs feature addition that allows reblogging of ask posts.

Basically, if you attempt to reblog an ask post from a permalink page (a themed, individual post page), Missing e may attribute the post body to the Tumblr who asked instead of the Tumblr who answered.

This has been fixed in version 2.2.17 (among other things), so I encourage you to update!

Missing e: Instructions for updating older versions from third-party sites

Do You Have an Older Version of Missing e from aThird-Party Website?

Some of you may have installed older versions of Missing e (earlier than version 2.0.0) from third-party websites, possibly so you could retain the Follow Checker and Unfollower features.

Older versions are no longer maintained. As a result, they will no longer work on “tumbelog” pages (this has been fixed in the current official version). Also, the added sidebar option in the Sidebar Tweaks feature stopped working at the beginning of September (this was fixed in versions 2.0.9 and higher).

As a result, it is no longer possible for users of older versions of Missing e to access the Follow Checker and Unfollower features. This will not be fixed, and it is unlikely that these features will return to Missing e

Updating Older Versions of Missing e (from Third-Party Websites)

More recent versions of Missing e have added a number of new features and fixed others. It would make sense for you to update!

If the normal update instructions do not work for you (it should update Missing e to the most recent version, which is 2.2.7 at the time this post was written), it is because you obtained it from one of the third-party sites I mentioned.

If this is the case, you will have to uninstall first (find out how) and then install the most recent official version (find out how).
