Remember where you left off in the dash with Missing e’s Bookmarker feature!
If you are anything like me, you spend a lot of time going through your Tumblr dashboard.
What happens if you need to get something productive done? What if you can’t get back on Tumblr for a while? How will you know where you stopped?
~ Save your place with Bookmarker ~
That’s just one of the possible uses of the Missing e Bookmarker feature. Simply click the bookmark icon of where you stopped going back or the last post you read (if you know where to stop tomorrow) and an entry is added to your list of bookmarks in the sidebar!
Next time you are on Tumblr, just click the bookmark entry to continue from there, or watch for the helpful bookmark bar that is added above that post in the dash to know how far you got last time.
When you no longer need a bookmark, remove it by clicking the post’s bookmark icon, or clicking on the x next to that bookmark in your sidebar list.
~ Bookmark Labels ~
By default, a new bookmark label will be a current timestamp. You can change the default bookmark label format in the Missing e settings (find out how).
You can also create or modify an existing bookmark with a custom label. Hold down the Shift key when clicking on a bookmark icon, or hold down the Shift key when clicking on an existing entry in the sidebar bookmark list to give it a custom name.
PROTIP: Ever wanted to jump to a specific date/time on your Tumblr dashboard?
It’s actually quite possible, thanks to Missing e and Tumblr power user, TJ!
So, here’s how it works:
TJ maintains a Tumblr account called soundofthebeep which posts the date and time (in the Eastern Time Zone) every 15 minutes. He also has set up soundofthebeeputc which posts the date and time in Coordinated Universal Time (for example, Eastern Standard Time is UTC - 5 hours, or UTC - 4 during daylight savings).
If you follow either of these accounts and go to the permalink page of any of its posts, you can click on the Missing e’s goto dash button to jump directly to your dashboard at that date/time and continue scrolling back from there!
Here’s an example:

- Make sure you are following soundofthebeep (or soundofthebeeputc if you prefer, though for this example, I will use soundofthebeep). You must be following the account for the goto dash button to be added.
- Go to the post page for the time of day you are interested in. For example, this one at 8:45 am on September 29.
- In the Tumblr control buttons at the top right, you’ll notice a goto dash button. It looks like an arrow that points left and says “Dash” beside it. Click it.
- Your browser will take you directly to your dash as of that date and time. All the posts you see will be whatever people you follow posted from earlier than that time!

Want to learn about a couple of lesser-known Missing e features?
There are many features in Missing e that you either don’t notice because they are seamlessly applied to your Tumblr experience or maybe because they are not activated by default and you have to turn them on in the settings.
I’ll highlight four of these for you and maybe try make a habit of this kind of post!
Ask Box on Dashboard
Sometimes you want to send someone an Ask, but you’re in the middle of scrolling back on the dashboard. Or you just don’t want to open a new page or tab! Well, under the Ask Tweaks feature in the Missing e settings, you can activate an option to open ask boxes on the dashboard.
Once this option is activated, simply click on the i icon that shows up on their avatar when you hover your mouse over it. The box that comes up can even be moved around by dragging it with your mouse!
Resizable Editor
Most Tumblr users create new posts in the “rich text editor”. You can see images and links as you put them in and you don’t need to know any HTML. The only downside is that the rich text editor isn’t resizable. It’s fairly small, so long posts or posts with big images are hard to work on!
By default, Missing e’s Posting Tweaks feature will add a resize handle to the rich text editor. To give yourself more room to create your post, just click and drag the resize handle (it looks like a triangle made up of two lines in the bottom right corner of the editor box).
Reblog Long Text Posts
Normally, if you try to reblog a long text post, Tumblr will cause your reblogged post to be a Link post pointing at the original, with the text cut off. You can easily choose to reblog the full text post by clicking the “as…” button at the top of the page, or get Missing e to do it automatically!
Although the option is not activated by default, you can have Missing e always let you reblog long text posts as text by turning it on under the Better Reblogs feature in the settings.
Reply Replies with Photos
Many Missing e users know that you can automatically create reply posts to respond to likes, replies and reblogs of your posts. However, did you know you can also create a “reply reply” with a photo post instead? Simply click the “as…” button at the top of the page to reply with a different kind of post!
Firefox “tip”: Fixing reply replies that always come out as “null”
So far as I have seen, this is a bug that only very rarely causes problems for users of the Firefox version of Missing e.
Basically, you click on a notification or reply in order to create a new Reply Replies post where you can respond to it.
Only, when the new post page opens, all you get in the body text is:
null
I have not yet found out why this happens, but there is a solution!
Warning! This fix will cause you to lose all of your Missing e bookmarks. Back up your bookmarks before following these instructions.
1) In the Firefox menu, go Tools and click on Clear Recent History…

2) Activate the option “Cookies” (and nothing else), select Everything under “Time range to clear” and click Clear Now.
After this is done, you’ll have to log in to Tumblr again.
Tutorial: Renaming ‘Missing e’ Bookmarks
You can set a custom name for a bookmark when you create it:
- Hold down the Shift key when you click on the bookmark icon of a post.
- A popup box will appear for you to write in the custom bookmark name.
You can also change the name of an existing bookmark:

- Hold down the Shift key when you click on a bookmark in the list in your dashboard sidebar.
- The link will change to an input where you can type in the custom name.
- Click the checkmark (or anywhere outside the textbox, really), or hit Enter to confirm the name change.
- If you decide not to change the name, just press the Esc key.
Also, you can specify the default format for new bookmark names in the Missing e settings page!
- Go to the settings page (find out how)
- You’ll find it under the Dashboard Features tab, under Bookmarker
- You can use any combination of the special codes which will be replaced with the current time or the username of the poster of the bookmarked post
Just a reminder about the new sortable notes feature in Missing e 2.2.2.
You can change the sort order (ascending or descending) for notification type and user name by clicking on it. Also, you can drag the two sort buttons around to sort by user name first and then notification type. Just click and hold with the mouse on the buttons and drag them around!
Troubleshooting Missing e on Google Chrome
For some reason, extensions on the Chrome browser can stop working from time to time. Usually it is only temporary, and so far I can find no reason for it.
If you use Missing e on Chrome and you find, one day, that Missing e doesn’t appear to be working, do not despair!
First, double-check that Missing e is, in fact, not running. If you open your Tumblr Dashboard and the e. icon doesn’t show up beside the Tumblr logout button at the top right of the page, then follow these steps to disable and re-enable Missing e:
- First, do not uninstall and reinstall Missing e unless the following steps do not work. If you uninstall, you will lose all of your Missing e settings!
- In the Google Chrome menu (the wrench icon at the top right of the browser window), go to Tools and click on Extensions.
- In the list of browser extensions that comes up, find Missing e.
- Click the “Disable” button just underneath. The Missing e entry will turn from white to grey.
- In that very same entry in the list, click the “Enable” button (exactly where the “Disable” button was) and the Missing e entry will turn back to white.
- Reload your Tumblr pages and Missing e should begin working again.
If you continue to have trouble, the next option would be to uninstall and reinstall Missing e. If this still does not solve your problem, please let me know in the Missing e ask box!
